Professional Deck Sanding, Deck Oiling & Staining!

At Glendale Carpentry, we’re decking specialists with a deep passion for natural timber and its timeless beauty. But we also understand the toll that sun, rain, and general wear can take on outdoor timber. Over time, decks and other exterior wood surfaces can become weathered, faded, and worn.

That’s why we offer professional deck sanding, oiling, and staining services—designed to restore and protect your outdoor space.

Regular maintenance not only revives the natural look and feel of your timber but also extends its lifespan by shielding it from moisture, UV damage, and daily wear and tear.

Our Process

Deck cleaning

That is the first step!   We begin by applying a professional-grade deck cleaning solution, carefully selected to suit your specific type of timber.

This specialised treatment breaks down dirt, grime, mould, and surface debris. After allowing it to penetrate and work its magic, we thoroughly rinse the deck—ensuring it’s clean and perfectly prepped for sanding.

Deck sanding

That is the second step! Once the deck is thoroughly cleaned and dry, we begin the sanding process. Using professional-grade sanding equipment, we carefully remove any old coatings, rough patches, splinters, and surface imperfections.

This step is essential for levelling uneven boards and opening the timber’s pores, ensuring optimal absorption of oils or stains. We adjust our sanding technique based on the timber type and condition, delivering a smooth, clean, and uniform surface that’s perfectly prepared for the next stage of treatment.

Deck Oiling/Staining

The final step in restoring your deck is where the magic happens—enhancing both its beauty and durability.

After sanding, we apply premium-quality decking oil or stain, carefully selected to suit your timber type and desired finish. This treatment penetrates deep into the wood, nourishing the fibres and creating a protective barrier against moisture, UV damage, mould, and general wear.

For those seeking to retain the timber’s natural look, clear or lightly tinted oils preserve its raw beauty while still offering excellent protection. If you’re after a refreshed or richer appearance, our range of timber stains can transform the colour of your deck while maintaining the grain's character.

We work with trusted, high-performance products to ensure a long-lasting, professional finish—whether your deck is made of Merbau, Blackbutt, Spotted Gum, or any other timber!

The result? A beautifully finished deck that not only looks stunning but is ready to withstand the elements for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at enquiries@glendalecarpentry.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We recommend oiling your deck every 12 months, or more frequently if your deck is exposed to harsh sun, heavy rain, or high foot traffic. For decks in coastal areas or full sun, re-oiling every 6–9 months may be necessary. A simple way to test: sprinkle water on the deck—if it doesn’t bead, it’s time to re-oil.

Yes, sanding is highly recommended before oiling—especially if the deck has old coatings, rough patches, or uneven surfaces. Sanding opens the timber's pores, allowing the oil to penetrate deeply for a longer-lasting, smoother finish. It also removes dirt and imperfections for a cleaner look.

Deck oil penetrates the timber to nourish and protect it while preserving the natural grain and colour.

Deck stain, on the other hand, adds colour (or tints) and can change the deck’s appearance while still offering protection. Some products combine both oil and stain properties. We can help you choose the best option based on your timber type and desired look.

Yes—cleaning before sanding is essential. Dirt, mould, and surface grime can clog sanding equipment and scratch the timber. Applying a deck cleaner beforehand removes contaminants, ensuring a smoother, more effective sanding process. A clean surface helps the sander work evenly and prevents imperfections from being ground into the wood.

The timeframe depends on the size and condition of the deck, as well as the weather. On average, a standard deck restoration—including cleaning, sanding, and oiling—can take 2 to 3 days. This allows time for proper drying between each step. We'll provide a clear timeline with your free quote.

Yes, absolutely. We start by sanding away old paint or stain, bringing the timber back to a clean surface. From there, we can apply oil or a new stain to suit your style. We'll assess your deck and recommend the best approach based on its current condition.

After oiling, we recommend allowing 24 to 48 hours of drying time before walking on the surface. This ensures the oil has properly penetrated and cured. Avoid moving furniture or placing heavy objects until the finish is fully dry.

We work with a wide range of timbers including Merbau, Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Jarrah, and Treated Pine, as well as composite decking materials. Each type requires specific treatment, and we select the most suitable products to ensure a long-lasting result.

Yes! We offer ongoing maintenance plans to keep your deck in top condition year-round. This includes periodic cleaning, reapplication of oil or stain, and minor repairs if needed. Regular care ensures your deck stays looking great and protected from the elements.

Yes, even a brand-new deck should be sanded and oiled. Most timber (especially hardwoods like Merbau or Spotted Gum) contains natural oils or tannins that can affect how new coatings absorb. Sanding removes surface residues, smooths the timber, and opens the grain—preparing it for better oil penetration.

Applying high-quality decking oil soon after installation will protect the timber from moisture, UV damage, and early wear, ensuring your deck stays beautiful and lasts longer.

We recommend treating it within a few weeks of installation once the timber has acclimatised.
